Socorro General Hospital Earns Prestigious Baby-friendly® Designation

February 27, 2019Press Release

SOCORRO, N.M. – In recognition of its commitment to providing exceptional care for mothers and babies, Socorro General Hospital has been named a Baby-Friendly® birth facility.

The designation by Baby Friendly, Inc., USA recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies. There are only 559 active sites in the United States.

"We are so proud of our team at Socorro General Hospital, who have worked incredibly hard to earn this designation," said Veronica Pound, chief hospital executive, Socorro General Hospital.  "This achievement highlights our strong commitment to helping new mothers successfully breastfeed their babies."

Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. is the U.S. organization charged with implementing the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Breastfeeding has many important benefits for both women and children. According to WHO and

UNICEF, breast milk gives infants the most complete nutrition possible and women who breastfeed have reduced risks of breast and ovarian cancer, Type II diabetes and postpartum depression. WHO and UNICEF recommend that breastfeeding be initiated in the first hour after birth, continued exclusively for the first six months of life and continued, with safe and adequate complementary foods, up to two years or beyond.

To qualify as Baby-Friendly®, a hospital must show it has put into place 10 evidence-based practices that support breastfeeding and undergo a rigorous on-site survey.
